Day 8 Devotion – Creation Days Five and Six

Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:20-26

Picture: The picture here shows the sequence that animals and plants appeared in the fossil record. It is the same sequence as that shown in chapter one of Genesis and even shows man as the last to appear.

On day five we see that God created aquatic animals and what the translators call birds. Then on day six we see the land dwelling organisms with man being the last thing created. Notice that the general trend of creation is from more simple to more complex. This is the same order found in the fossil record. However, if these organisms on day five really are birds then there is a contradiction with science. If you look up all of the Hebrew words used here you will see that Moses used the most general terms he could. The word used here just means flying things and can refer to insects. Moses had plenty of words to use for birds if he wanted to. The Cambrian explosion shows us that all major animal phyla appeared suddenly in the sea, followed by flying insects. Next small creatures appear on land, followed by large four-legged animals and mammals after the dinosaurs went extinct. Man is the crown jewel of creation showing up most recently. How could Moses know this sequence if the fossils weren’t discovered until the 1900s?
